The End of the School Year Blues
As the end of the school year has come and gone for post-secondary students, now is the time when many students find themselves facing the “end of the school year blues”, and for some, an overwhelming sense of dissatisfaction with their chosen program.
To all the students out there who are feeling uncertain and unhappy in their academic path, know that you are not alone. Every day we speak to students who discover along the way that the program they thought was a perfect fit turns out to be a mismatch for their strengths, interests or passions.
However, this experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of getting it right the first time around. And the good news is, it doesn’t have to be this way. When choosing post-secondary programs and schools, students can bring to the choice lots of information about their strengths, interests, successes and key influences to make thoughtful and informed choices. At Career Solutions, we help students figure out what matters to them and show them how it can help them make good decisions about post-secondary schools and programs. It takes a bit of time and effort, but it is easier to avoid disasters than cope with them after the fact.
And for those of you who find yourself in the wrong program, don’t despair. Remember that it’s never too late to make a change. Students have positive choices available to them when their programs don’t fit their learning, career or developmental needs. They can reduce their course loads, restructure their academic programs, change programs or faculties, or even take a break from school. If you’re not where you want to be, take a deep breath, embrace your courage, and explore alternative paths that align with your strengths, interests and passions.
